Shakti Mudra Breakdown

Creative energy, dynamic, transformational. Shakti is the energy that runs through all of us - the Divine Feminine that is beyond gender. She is our heart beat, the pulse of creative urge...Creatrix. This mudra is a beautiful one to use if you’re feeling a little overwhelmed and in need of some grounding and support. If you are also facing a situation that brings about uncertainty or anxiety, this is a gorgeous one for helping you to feel you can adapt to whatever is happening at this moment, remaining open and receptive.

'Mudra' is the Sanskrit word meaning 'seal' and is a way of directing energy, or prana, in the body by connecting different body parts with each other, such as the fingers or the soles of the feet.

To practice this mudra, wrap the first (air) and second (ether) fingers around the thumb (fire); join the fingertips of the third (earth) and little (water) fingers and point them downwards. Uniting the water and earth digits helps to bring balance to your energies (prana) and encourage the flow of apana (downward energy), helping you to feel more grounded and stable, ready to step into whatever is needed from you. 


Ideally, the mudra should be held at the lower abdomen, helping to gather the energy around the sacral and root chakras, reinforcing the grounding whilst encouraging you to stay in flow. 

If you want to use this mudra for a longer period, the image below shows Miriam using a pillow to help prop her hands up. This helps to take any tension out of the shoulders, upper back and jaw areas.


If you’re a yoga teacher and wanted to use this in a class, it’s really lovely to practise with any asanas that focus on the lower chakras - gomukasana (cow-face), twists, balances and the like.

If you’re new to mudra, remember to warm up your fingers first by massaging (yummy!) and moving the hands and fingers first. As in your asana practice, don’t force your hands into anything they’re not ready for, take it slowly - intention is the thing.
